Autism
Day Program
The Day Program provides high quality, individualized education and treatment programs for children age four to seven who are experiencing a range of difficulties and challenges. Children who are diagnosed on the mild to moderate end of the Autism Spectrum may be eligible for this service. This early child development program operates in a school setting from September through June.
Each year, approximately 40 children take part in our Day Program. Each classroom accommodates six children with two teachers (one teacher-therapist; one Toronto District School Board teacher) working intensively with children in a group setting. Additional support staff include social workers, psychologists, speech and language pathologists, a music therapist and an occupational therapist consultant.
Approach
The Day Program approach is holistic (recognizing that every area of the child’s development is interrelated with every other area), therapeutic (treatment-focused), and academic. All sides come together when specific instruction, education, and treatment are integrated into the daily holistic program.
Children are assigned to classrooms based on a mix grouping/need philosophy to promote opportunities for peer support and learning in a diverse environment. A play-based curriculum is fundamental to how we believe children learn best.
Toronto Partnership for Autism Services
Toronto Partnership for Autism Services (TPAS) provides Child and Family Support Services, Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI), and parent education and training support services to children with autism and their families. The program delivers one-to-one, dyad, and group based services to 16 children at any given time in a classroom setting. The program operates according to provincial guidelines and it is built on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA).
Children diagnosed on the severe end of the Autism Spectrum may be eligible for this service. TPAS services are provided by five partner agencies: Surrey Place Centre (lead agency for the Toronto region), Adventure Place, Aisling Discoveries Child and Family Centre, The Etobicoke Children's Centre and Geneva Centre for Autism. Adventure Place is a recognized regional provider of the Ontario Government’s Autism Intervention Program.
